To make char cloth, cut a piece of 100% cotton fabric into small squares, place them in a metal container with a small hole in the lid, and heat over an open flame until smoke stops coming out of the hole. Char cloth catches sparks easily and burns slowly, making it an ideal fire starter in damp conditions. You can create char cloth at home before your outdoor adventure or pack some in your survival kit for emergencies.
